Environmental benchmarking

Environmental benchmarking is a tool for assessing and managing the environmental performance of "Samruk-Energy" JSC by comparing its own indicators with the results of leading companies in the industry. This approach contributes to the introduction of international best practices in the field of environmental management and sustainable development. The current analysis uses publicly available data for 2022-2024

The following indicators have been identified for benchmarking

  • Use of fresh water for technological and domestic drinking needs
  • Direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions.

To determine the environmental trend, the largest companies in the energy industry of Kazakhstan and the world were analysed, namely:

  • ERG;
  • "CAEPCO" JSC;
  • KUS LLP;
  • Enel Group;
  • PJSC Inter RAO;
  • PJSC RusHydro.

The companies differ in installed capacity and the amount of electricity generated, so a comparative analysis of specific indicators of greenhouse gas emissions and fresh water intake is conditional.Based on the results of the comparative analysis for 2022-2024, "Samruk-Energy" JSC demonstrates sustainable and competitive results in terms of carbon and water efficiency against the background of comparable energy companies.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Specific GHG emissions of "Samruk-Energy" JSC decreased from 0.93 tCO2-eq/thousand kWh in 2023 to 0.82 tCO2-eq/thousand kWh in 2024 (-12%). According to this indicator, the Company

  • is below ERG (1.53–1.57 tCO2-eq/thousand kWh), CAEPCO JSC (1.37–1.41) and KUS LLP (1.29–1.31)
  • demonstrates a comparable level with PJSC Inter RAO (0.59–0.60), taking into account the differences in the generation structure
  • is inferior to companies with a high share of renewable energy sources and hydroelectric power plants — Enel Group (0.15–0.27) and PJSC RusHydro (0.23–0.27).

Water use

The average specific water intake of "Samruk-Energy" JSC for 2022-2024 amounted to 5.94 m³/thousand kWh, which

  • 17.3 times lower than ERG (~103 m³/thousand kWh)
  • 26% higher than that of PJSC RusHydro (4.96 m³/thousand kWh)
  • 21 times higher than that of the Enel Group (0.28 m³/thousand kWh), which is due to the high share of renewable energy in the structure of its generation.

As part of the analysis, publicly available data for 2022–2024 were used. After the publication of environmental indicators for 2025, the benchmarking will be updated, and its updated results, subject to analysis for the period 2022–2024, will be posted on the Company's official website.
